Captain Tom Watson rounded out the
U.S. Ryder Cup team last Tuesday by selecting Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan and
Webb Simpson as his three captain’s picks for the biennial match-play contest with
Europe to be played September 26-28 at Gleneagles in Scotland.

Gleneagles - Wow! |
Bradley, Mahan and Simpson join the
nine players who automatically qualified for the team in the points race –
Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Jimmy Walker, Phil Mickelson, Matt
Kuchar, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and Zach Johnson.
Europe has won five of the last six
matches, including in 2012 when the Euros stormed back from a 10-6 deficit on
the last day to win, 14½-13½, at Medinah Country Club northwest of Chicago. See
the TGA Blog post Funky Cold Medinah here.
The lone victory for the U.S. came in 2008.
There
will be a great deal more on the Ryder Cup front before the matches begin. Suffice it to say that Watson must know that
without being able to call out the names Nicklaus, Palmer and -yes - Watson in
their primes, his three captain’s picks will not help the U.S. carry the day at
Gleneagles.
