Ralph
Waldo Emerson famously wrote that “a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of
little minds.”
![]() |
Another word coined by Shakespeare |
However, there is nothing
foolish about the consistency recently demonstrated by PGA Tour golfer Gary
Woodland. Woodland has now made 17 consecutive cuts on the PGA tour, the leader
in this category. On the other hand, no
PGA Tour golfers with as many cuts made on last year’s 2017--2018 Tour season as
Woodland (21), save for Nick Watney (1), C,.T. Pan (2) and Zach Johnson (2) had
fewer top ten finishes than Woodland (3).
Woodland did win one tournament last season, but in his career he has
held a 54-hole lead or co-lead in
stroke-play event on the PGA Tour seven times, including last week’s Sentry Tournament of
Champions but he could
not close out any of those tournaments with a victory. (It may not be as easy as it looks to close
out after a 54-hole lead. Golf.com
analyzed 42 stroke play events in the 2016-17 season. Golf.com determined that 51 different players
held at least a share of the 54-hole lead in those 42 tournaments. However, only 27% of those players (14)
held on to win the tournament.)
Hopefully Woodland will add to his consecutive cut
streak as the 2018-2019 Tour season progresses.
However, he has miles to go to catch the all-time consecutive cut leader
(no surprise, it’s Tiger Woods with 142 consecutive cuts made! In fact, Woodland has a long way to go to
even crawl into the top six (Tom Kite is ranked sixth with 53 consecutive cuts
made.) Regardless of whether Woodland breaks his other streak, and wins a tournament after
holding a 54-hole lead, he most likely will not be heard singing the following
sad refrain very often this season.

One stroke over
the cut sweet Jesus
One stroke over the cut
Sittin' in my Lear on a red-hot tarmac
One stroke over the cut
Awaitin' for the pilot flying home, sweet Mary
Hopin' that the pilot’s on time
Sittin' in my Lear on a red-hot tarmac
One stroke over the cut
One stroke over the cut
Sittin' in my Lear on a red-hot tarmac
One stroke over the cut
Awaitin' for the pilot flying home, sweet Mary
Hopin' that the pilot’s on time
Sittin' in my Lear on a red-hot tarmac
One stroke over the cut
Whoooo does golf
love, I hope it's me
I've bin a struglin', as you can plainly see
I felt the joy and I learned about the pain missing the cut did
If I should choose to make this part of my game surely fix my head
I've bin a struglin', as you can plainly see
I felt the joy and I learned about the pain missing the cut did
If I should choose to make this part of my game surely fix my head
One stroke over the cut sweet Jesus
One stroke over the cut
Sittin' in my Lear on a red-hot tarmac
One stroke over the cut
Awaitin' for the pilot flying home, sweet Mary
Hopin' that the pilot’s on time
Sittin' in my Lear on a red-hot tarmac
One stroke over the cut
I hit the ball a country mile,
But it flies off course and I don’t smile
I played all the
shots and loved myself a few
Taken by surprise all the rough I've been through
I ended over par and now I'm
One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One stroke over the cut sweet Jesus
One stroke over the cut
Sittin' in my Lear on a red-hot tarmac
One stroke over the cut
Awaitin' for the pilot flying home, sweet Mary
Hopin' that the pilot’s on time
Sittin' in my Lear on a red-hot tarmac
One stroke over the cut
I don’t want to be
One stroke over the cut sweet Jesus
One stroke over the cut
Sittin' in my Lear on a red-hot tarmac
One stroke over the cut
Awaitin' for the pilot flying home, sweet Mary
Hopin' that the pilot’s on time
Sittin' in my Lear on a red-hot tarmac
One stroke over the cut
